Two households open their door to us, and we bring a few people at a time. You will cook over an open fire rather than watch someone cook, eat what the family eats, and leave when the evening has run its course. There is no schedule, because a schedule is what turns a welcome into a show.

What happens

  1. Met at the gate by the family who host the visit, with your interpreter
  2. Milking and the morning work of the boma, if you want to take part
  3. Cooking over an open fire — you do the cooking, not the watching
  4. Lunch with the household
  5. Dancing, if the evening turns that way. Nobody performs to a schedule

In practice that means a household can decline a visit on any day without giving a reason, that you are introduced rather than delivered, and that what you pay reaches the people who host you rather than an agent in between.
