The former Selous, and one of the largest protected areas in Africa. Water is what sets it apart: the Rufiji spreads into a system of lakes and channels, so you can track wild dog by vehicle in the morning and drift past hippo and crocodile by boat in the afternoon. Walking safaris are permitted here in a way they are not in the northern parks.
Best time: June to October for game concentration, though the green months from January bring birds and far fewer vehicles. How long: three or four nights, usually flown in from Dar es Salaam.
