Why come
What Ndutu is known for
Calving season
Around half a million wildebeest born in a few weeks, late January to March.
Predators, close
The densest concentration of hunting anywhere on the circuit, for exactly that reason.
Open short grass
Nowhere for anything to hide, which is what makes the sightings.
Not a park but a place — the short-grass plains where the Serengeti meets the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and where the wildebeest come to calve. For a few weeks each year this holds the densest concentration of newborn animals, and of the predators that follow them, anywhere on earth.
Best time: late January to March, and the timing follows the rains rather than the calendar. How long: three nights, because the herds move and one morning is a gamble.
