Ruaha sits where eastern and southern African ecosystems overlap, so greater and lesser kudu share the same valleys, and the Great Ruaha River draws elephant, buffalo and some of the largest lion prides on the continent through the dry months.
Best time: June to October, when the river shrinks to pools and everything comes to drink. How long: three nights minimum — it is a flight or a long drive, and one night wastes the journey.
