Serengeti means "endless plains" in the Maa language, and standing in it, you understand why. This is the stage for the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth: more than a million wildebeest and zebra moving in a slow, ancient circle, followed always by the predators who depend on them.
What you will see: lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, and the great herds. In the northern season, the drama of the Mara River crossings.
Best time: the dry months of June to October for classic game viewing and the crossings; January and February on the southern plains for the calving. How long: two full days at least, three or more to travel with the herds.
